I love film photography, and I love the world of black and white. As much as I love beautiful colors, I am also very fascinated by the colorless or grayscale world.

Unlike digital photography, film photography takes so much of my time and work because I not only need to take the pictures, but I also need to develop the negatives and then make prints from the negatives in the darkroom. It takes a tremendous amount of time to create one work from the beginning to the end. Perhaps that’s one of the reasons why I love film photography so much.

I have developed many rolls and sheets of films on my own, including 35mm, medium format, and large format.

Implementing Zone System in my photography has helped me to learn how to pre-visualize world, and these experiences have given me the discipline to actually see the world and then how to express it the way I want.

フィルム写真、そして白黒の世界が大好きです。美しい鮮やかな色も大好きですが、それと同じ位に、無彩色の白黒の世界に魅了されます。

デジタル写真とは違い、フィルム写真には相当な時間と労力が必要とされます。写真を撮り、ネガを化学薬品で現像し、現像したネガを元にダークルームでプリントを作成する一連の作業を経て、ようやく一枚の写真が完成するからです。フィルムをカメラにセットしてから、最終的にダークルームで一枚のプリントを完成させるまでに、一体何日、何時間費やしているのか自分でも分からなくなるほどです。

35mm、中判、大判フィルムを含めて数えきれないぐらいのフィルムを今まで自分で現像し、またプリントを作成してきました。アンセル・アダムスらが考案したゾーンシステムは、私達が今までとは違った目で世界を見ること(プリ・ビジュアライゼーション)を可能にしてくれます。
